NEGARA KERTAGAMA CANTO 79-82

NEGARA KERTAGAMA
CANTO 79-82

[Canto 79]
  1. Already all those deshas (districts) of Java were traced as to their establishments in the past, how they had been performed, dharmas (religious domains), simas (estates), on the other hand wanqshas (family-Iands), hila-hila hulun hyangs (sacred lands of Spirits' servants), kutis (halls) and kalagyans (artisans' places). All those eventually provided with pramanas (legal instruments) were confirmed, anyone without pramana was censured. He returned to the desha bhertya (bondmen's districts), being found in the wrong by the honoured Arya (Honourable) Ramadhiraja.
  2. The Illustrious Protector of Wengker sent messengers to trace those deshas (districts), all of them, to be described. The Illustrious Protector of Singasari sent messengers to trace the size of the dapurs (rural communities) and objects of that kind. Equally observing the patik-gundala (regulations) were they, taking care of religious concerns not indolently. (That is) the cause of this: that Yawa-land (Java) minds its conduct, following the Illustrious Prince's shasanas (precepts).
  3. There now, the other island, Bali, is firmly following all customs of Yawa-land (Java). Dharmas (domains) and gramas (village-communities) also kuwus (manors) were traced as to their establishments now, already it was put in order. The honoured Buddhist adhyaksas (bishops) have their places in Badahulu and in Lwa Gajah, not negligent, supervising the multitude of the eminent dharmas (domains) of the kasugatan (Buddhist clergy), being sent by the Illustrious Prince to be guardians.
[Canto 80]
  1. The specification of the kasogatans (Buddhist domains) there in Bali is: Kadhikaranan, also Kuti Hanar, with Purwanagara, also Wihara, Badung, Adirajya, Kuturan. Six now are the kabajradharans (places of thunderbolt bearers) there, excellent, only in Wihara now is a kawinayan (place of clergy under disciplinary regulations). In great variety, to begin with Arya Dadi, Raja Sanmata, are their kutis (halls), not to be mentioned.
  2. In company with those is that eminent dharma (domain) on Bukit Sulang-Lemah in Lampung, the other country, celebrated by the name Tathagatapura, gerhasthadhara (land of pious householders), with an eminent prashasti (charter) confirmating it. Sky-tastes-sun Shaka (1260 = 1338 A.D.) is its time, a foundation of the Princess the Jiwana-Mistress in the oIden time. An eIder sumantri (eminent mandarin), an upasaka (Buddhist layman), was the performer of the bhumishuddha (land-purifying) ceremony, next the pratistha (establishing) ceremony, being sent out (to do that).
  3. All kinds of those swatantras (independent lands) now really provided with pramanas (legal instruments) were confirmed by the Prince's activity. Kirtis (public utility foundations) of honoured pristine eminent people in all their embodiments, these were guarded and so kept safe. Like this is the disposition of the honoured excellent Prabhu, paramount world-conquering, powerful, only in order that again be guarded all there is of His (own) kirtis (foundations) by the honoured Prabhus in the future.
  4. Also he has the purpose that should be seen an absence of miscreants in all the land protected (by him). That was the reason of those pradeshas (rural districts) being traced, searched, with boundary: the ocean, beaten, that there might be order for the worshipful the tapaswis (anchorites), all there are on the shores, in mountains, in woods, in pradeshas (rural districts), retired, that they might take delight in the practising of tapa (asceticism), brata (vows), samadhi (meditation), combining them for the wellbeing of the whole world.
[Canto 81]
  1. How great is the Prince's undertaking that might be confirmed the tripaksa (three denominations) in Java! Their ancient customs in the prashastis (charters) of old, those were guarded and taken care of. Our lord's diligence is zealous, His aim in their being given the patik-gundala (regulations) is: that there should not be forgetfulness with Them as to the way of adhigama (law-books), shiksa (doctrines) and also shasana (precepts).
  2. This is the cause that the honoured caturdwijas (four priesthoods) all of them are striving after excellence. Wipras (brahmins) and reshis (friars), Shiwaites, Buddhists are conscientious, (each group) in their own wisdom, mindful. All the honoured caturashrama (four hermitages), the principal: the caturbhasma (four ash-marks), crowded, equally now those are bowing over their brata (vowed duties), (each group) expert in their own kriya (religious activities).
  3. There are all of the worshipful the honoured caturjana (four classes), everyone orderly (mentioned) in the shasana (precepts): mantris (mandarins), in the first place the honoured aryas (Honourables), two of them, versed in the country-guardianship, kryans (noble gentlemen) of ksatriyawangsha (noble families) and also walis (officers), virtuous, zealous in management. Joining them are the waishyas (third estate) of the whole country. The shudras (common people) take pleasure in their own concerns, fixed.
  4. These are the janmis, four (four classes of people), sujanma (wellborn), having sprung from holy Widhi (Order). (According to) the words of the shastras (books of learning) allowed are all goings, eventually, to these by Princes in Royal compounds. Equally these are firm in their own particular good behaviours. Moreover (there are) kujanmas (low-born classes), three of them, thus: Candalas, Mlecchas, Tucchas, all of them zealous in their own particular customs.
[Canto 82]
  1. [Being] such is the aspect of that land Java in the reign of the Illustrious Protector, being obeyed, nor is there any doubt in His heart while working for kirti (glory, and: foundations), giving joy to the world. Naturally the Illustrious Protectors, the two of them, taking care of our lord, make eminent dharma kushalas (religious domains), and the Illustrious Prince's brothers-in-law calling him senior, join in the Illustrious Prince's disposition.
  2. The Illustrious Protector of Singasari opened in Sagada a dharma (domain), unmeasured, the Illustrious Protector of Wengker in Shurabana, Pasuruhan, also that .one in Pajang, the Illustrious Protector of Sthana (Paguhan), now, that Rawa in Kapulungan and Locanapura, the Illustrious Protector of Watsari (Matahun) that Tigawangi, making contentment of the common people.
  3. All mantris (mandarins), once kertawara (distinguished) being given simas (estates), try to outvie each other: caityas (small sanctuaries, shrines), prsadas (temple-towers) now as a matter of fact are [what is] built there, and also linggas (ithyphallic sanctuaries), excellent, regularly. They are submissive to the Holy Ones, submissive to the Ancestors' group, equally obsequious to the muniwaras (excellent sages). Gifts and kirtis (public utility foundations), punya (good works) are practised there, all of the honoured Prabhu's conduct is followed.
